Among the majestic mountains of the Greater Caucasus, in the eco-friendly Quba district, hides one of the main natural attractions of Azerbaijan — the Afurja Waterfall. This magnificent cascade, falling from a height of 75 meters, is rightfully considered the pearl of the region and attracts thousands of tourists eager to touch the power of pristine nature.
Natural Wonder of the Caucasus
Afurja Waterfall is located in the gorge of the Afurjachay River, 25 kilometers from the city of Quba. The water feeding the waterfall flows from glaciers and snowfields located on the peaks of the surrounding mountains. Thanks to this, the waterfall is especially full-flowing in spring and early summer, when meltwater reaches its maximum volume.
The waterfall itself is a powerful stream of water plunging from a vertical cliff and forming a cloud of spray and rainbow dust at the bottom. The view of the waterfall is especially impressive in sunny weather, when rainbows form in the water spray. The sound of falling water can be heard several kilometers before reaching the waterfall.
Origin of the Name
The name "Afurja" comes from the Azerbaijani word "afurca", which means "spraying". This name perfectly describes the character of the waterfall, whose water jets scatter into many tiny droplets, creating a characteristic cloud of spray around the base.
Route to the Waterfall
The path to Afurja Waterfall starts from the Quba-Khachmaz highway and is an exciting hiking route through the mountain forest. The trail passes through a picturesque beech forest, where you can see century-old trees, rare plants, and mountain birds.
📍 How to Get There
From Quba city: drive along the highway towards Khachmaz, then turn onto the road to the village of Afurja. Then follow the signs to the beginning of the hiking route.

Best Time to Visit
Afurja Waterfall is beautiful in any season, however, each season has its own characteristics:
-
Spring (April-May)
Maximum waterfall due to meltwater. Especially beautiful during the flowering season of mountain flowers.
-
Summer (June-August)
Warm weather, opportunity to swim in natural pools at the base of the waterfall.
-
Autumn (September-October)
Purple-golden colors of the mountain forest, fewer tourists, comfortable weather for hiking.
-
Winter (November-March)
The waterfall partially freezes, forming ice stalactites. Requires special equipment.
What to Bring
For a comfortable and safe hike to Afurja Waterfall, we recommend bringing the following items:
🎒 Essential Checklist
Comfortable hiking shoes with non-slip sole, warm clothing (in the mountains it's 5-10 degrees cooler than in the valley), raincoat or waterproof jacket, water and snacks, sunscreen and sunglasses, flashlight (for possible early starts), first aid kit with band-aids and painkillers.
Photography Opportunities
Afurja Waterfall is a true paradise for photographers. You can take amazing shots here at any time of day. Especially effective are photos taken in the "golden hour" — in the first hours after sunrise or a few hours before sunset, when soft light emphasizes the texture of the water and creates rainbows in the spray.
For waterfall photography, we recommend using a tripod and long exposure, which will turn the water flow into a silky veil. It's also worth paying attention to the surrounding landscape: moss-covered rocks, evergreen trees, and mountain peaks in the background create the perfect backdrop for landscape photos.
